Coronary Heart Disease Flashcards
What can cause atherosclerosis?
Smoking, high bp, high cholesterol levels, not enough regular exercise, having diabetes
Name two causes of coronary heart disease.
Atherosclerosis and thrombosis
What is meant by thrombosis?
A blood clot in a vein or artery increasing the risk of a heart attack.
What symptoms are associated with coronary heart disease?
Angina, heart attacks, heart failure
What lifestyle changes can be made to help manage coronary heart disease?
Stopping smoking, eating more healthily, exercising more regularly.
What is coronary heart disease?
When the blood supply’s blocked or interrupted by a build up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis can affect the arteries as it causes them to narrow and harden which restricts the blood flow.
What medical interventions can be taken to help treat and manage CHD?
Anti-platelets (to reduce the risk of clots), statins (lower cholesterol levels), beta-blockers (prevent angina and treats high blood pressure), nitrates (to widen blood vessels) and a heart transplant
