Define what a stroke is
ischaemia to part of the brain or haemorrhage into the brain that results in death of bran cells
What are the risk factors?
Non-modifiable: Age, gender, ethnicity, family hx, heredity
Modifiable: HTN, heart disease, obesity, DM, hyperlipidaemia, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity etc
What is the difference between an ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke?
Ischemic= partial/ complete occlusion of artery
Haemorrhagic: Bleeding into brain tissue or subarachnoid space- eg rupture
What are the clinical manifestations of a stroke?
Haemorrhagic stroke= neurological deficits, headache, N + vomiting, decreased level of consciousness, HTN
L) brain= paralysed R) side, impaired speech, slow performance, anxiety, depression
R) brain= paralysed L) side, spatial perceptual deficits, reduced attention span, impaired judgment
Other impairments= mobility, respiratory function, swallow and speech, aggravated gag reflex, self-care deficits.
What are the main aims of collaborative care for a person who has had a stroke?
Maximise communication abilities, nutrition, maintain a stable or improved LOC, attain maximum physical functioning and body functions, attain maximum self-care abilities and skills.
