Stroke Flashcards
What is a TIA?
Transient ischaemic attack
Temporary lack of oxygen to part(s) of the brain due to a disturbance in the blood supply
Leading to loss of speech, vision, numbness or weakness
Possible indicator for future more serious strokes
Resolved within 24hours
Define the types of stroke
Ischemic - occurring when blood supply is blocked in a vessel of the brain
2 types - thrombotic localised blockages caused by a thrombus in the vessel or an embolism where a clot from else where in the body travels to the brain and obstructs a vessel
Haemorrhagic - intacranial haemorrhage is a bleed inside the cranial vault
Epidural ( duramater and skull)
Subdural (subdural space)
Subarachnoid ( arachnoid and Pia mater)
Cerebral haemorrhage
Stroke risk factors
Cardiovascular disease Diabetes Hypertension Smoking Clotting disorders Age Obesity
Stroke motor symptoms
Tone alterations Weakness Asymmetry Loss of normal movement patterns Loss of postural adjustments Compensations
Stroke sensory symptoms
Impaired cutaneous sensation

Dysarthria (motor speech disorder)
Expressive dysphasia
Receptive dysphasia

What is a stroke
Also known as a CVA
it is a rapid loss of brain function due to the disturbance in the blood supply to the brain
as a result of ischaemia, blockage or haemorrhage
