Stroke Flashcards
Ischemic stroke
blood flow in a cerebral blood vessel is interrupted
- blood vessels are obstructed by emboli or thrombus
importance of CT scan after a stroke
to determine if it is ischemic (clot) or hemorrhagic (bleed)
zones of ischemic pneumbra?
inner zone - infarcted tissue (dead_
middle zone - pneumbra that still has functioning neurons
outer zone - healthy tissue
5 signs of stroke
weakness, trouble speaking, vision problems, headache, dizziness
treatments for strokes
thrombolytics (tPA), fibrinolytics, angioplasty and stent placement, craniotomy, CSF drainage, aneurysm clipping, carotid endarterectomy
hemorrhagic stroke
bleeding occurs inside or around brain tissue
contraindications to tPA

- blood glucose <= 3.0 mmol/L
- seizure at onset of symptoms or witnessed
- GSC < 9
- terminally ill or palliative care pt
