Reactive stressors
Small things, that stress us out. Like OCD person seeing a non level book shelf.
Cognitive stressors
2 consequences
- things happening too fast, feel as though you are behind aircraft.
- lack of time itself, a stress by itself. Lack of time, could mean you increase your chance of risk taking. Taking shortcuts.
Imaginary stressors
Anxiety or apprehension.
E.g. dog going to vets for the second time.
Organisational stress on pilots
Insufficient hands-on flying.
- rostering
- anxiety over checks
- lack of responsibility & decision making
Stress break point. / OVERLOAD (Psychological Effects of too much stress)
Tunnelled vision. Coning of attention. Mental block.
REGRESSION. (A lack of mental capability). CONFIRMATION BIAS.
Loss of situational awareness. Forgetfulness. Loss concentration.
The 3 effects of chronic stress on performance
OMISSION - forgetful
ERROR - incorrect response to given stimulus
QUEING - unable to prioritise
Under load and it’s affect?
Too relaxed. Loss of situational awareness. Uninterested/motivational.
(E.g. Goalkeeper chilling through game, then has to deal with shot at end of game) Load duration & high intensity at times. Not ready to deal with the high intensity.
Physiological effects of chronic stress
Nausea
Indigestion
Coronary heart disease
High blood pressure
3 ways of coping with stress:
⚫️Direct / action coping. Remove the stressor. ⚫️Cognitive coping. Rationalise or ignore. ⚫️Symptom Directed coping. Treat the symptoms and not the stressor.
The stress management you take part in must be:
⚫️Preventative - keeping stress levels to minimum.
⚫️Curative - solving the problem.
First cockpit tool to suffer as a result of stress is:
Communication
To prevent stress in the cockpit:
⚫️know your job.
⚫️thorough pre-flight preparations & planning.
⚫️hone CRM skills.
