Stress response and homeostatic balance Flashcards
define homeostasis
ability to maintain a constant internal environment in response to environmental changes
outline the 4 stages of the feedback system cycle
- stimulus
- receptors
- input
- output
what is a short loop negative feedback
inhibition of hypothalamic tropic hormones by the anterior pituitary tropic
hormone
what is a long loop negative feedback
the hormone whose secretion is stimulate by the tropic hormone that generally feeds back to the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary to inhibit secretion of tropic hormone
when does stress exist
when an imbalance or discrepancy exists between perceived demands and perceived coping resources
what is a stressor
anything that prompts the body to:
- respond quickly to potentially dangerous stimuli
what is cushing syndrome and how can it be caused
- chronically increased level of cortisol
- can be caused by an ACTH producing tumour
what is Addison’s disease and what is it due to
- chronic low levels of circulating cortisol
