Stress Psychology: Workplace Stress Flashcards
Who did a study into Workplace stress?
Marmot et al.
Name the 3 factors that can affect stress in the workplace
> Role Conflict
Workload
Job-Control
What did Marmot do initially ?
Marmot investigated the job-strain model of workplace stress. This model proposes that the workplace creates stress and illness in two ways: high workload and low job control. Five years later the ppts were re-assessed.
What did Marmot find for Workload?
Marmot found no link between high workload and stress-related illness and therefore concluded that job demand was not a significant factor in stress.
What did Johansson do?
He investigated the link between high workload and stress. He studied the sawyers at a Swedish sawmill who have a stressful job. He compared them to Cleaners who have a less stressful job.
What did Johansson find?
He found that the sawyers had a higher illness rate and also higher levels of adrenaline in their urine unlike the cleaners.
What did Marmot find for job-control?
Marmot et al. at the end of his original study found that those you work the best and performed the best had fewer heart problems than those that had a worse performance.
The ones who scored better showed a sense of high job-control whereas the ones who scored poorly showed a low job-control.
Explain Role Conflict and Stress?
Conflict between work and family is commonly associated with higher levels of absenteeism, lower levels of performance and poorer physical and mental health.
