Define Type A personality
The Type A behavioural pattern is characterized by constant time pressure, competitiveness in work and social situations and anger.
Who did a study on Type A personality?
Friedman and Rosenman
What did Friedman and Rosenman do?
They got 3000 men aged 39 to 59 and examined them for CHD and their personalities were assessed using a structured interview.
What did Friedman and Rosenman find?
They found that Type A had double the chance of getting heart attacks (12.8%).
What did Raglan and Brand do in reference to the Friedman and Rosenman study?
They did a followup study and found that 15% of the men had died of CHD. They found that there was no relationship between Type A behaviour and mortality.
What did Myrtek do in reference to the Friedman and Rosenman study?
They carried out a meta-analysis of 35 studies on this topic. They found a link between CHD and a component of Type A personality - hostility. Other than this there was no evidence of association between Type A personality and CHD.

Kobasa used the SRRS scale on 800 businessmen.
What did Kobasa find?
Kobasa found that 150 of the ppts were classed as experiencing high stress, some of these people had a low illness record whereas others had high illness record.
