Stress
Physical and psychological response to internal or external stressors
Stressors
Specific events or that puts demands on a person or threaten the person’s well-being
ex: exam, test, relationships, etc.
Health Psychology
How resilient people are in terms of taking care of their stress
Chronic Stressors
Sources of stress that are continuous or repeat often
Ex: Social relationships, discrimination, bullying
Perceived Control
The ability to cope with stress
General Adaption Syndrome (GAS)
The 3 stages of responses that appear physically
Alarm Phase
Rapid body movement to respond to threat
Resistance Phase
Adapting to normalize being alert
Exhaustion Phase
Body’s resistance fails: aging, immune system weakens, etc.
Heart and circulatory system is sensitive to stress
Burnout
A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion created by long-term involvement in an emotionally demanding situation
Repression
Deliberately avoiding and ignoring the stressor
Rationalization
Accepting that the stressor exists, Exposing themselves of the stressor, and understanding how the stressor affects their life
Reframing
Finding a new or creative way to think about a stressor that reduces a threat
Body Management
Meditation, relaxation, aerobic exercise
