Models of stress?

A

1) Stimulus model
- What causes us stress?
- Focuses on external environment. Events that can be labelled and are measurable.
2) Transactional (psychological model)
- Why does it stress us?
- Mismatch between our appraisals of our demands and our abilities and coping resources.
- Determined by our primary appraisal and secondary appraisals of the situation.
3) Response Model
- How does the stress affect us?
- Emotional, Physiological, and behavioural responses.

Adaptive Coping

  • Problem-focused= Dealing with the stressor directly.
  • Emotion-focused= Doing things to help change your feelings about the stressor without directly tackling the stressor.
