Models of stress?
1) Stimulus model
- What causes us stress?
- Focuses on external environment. Events that can be labelled and are measurable.
2) Transactional (psychological model)
- Why does it stress us?
- Mismatch between our appraisals of our demands and our abilities and coping resources.
- Determined by our primary appraisal and secondary appraisals of the situation.
3) Response Model
- How does the stress affect us?
- Emotional, Physiological, and behavioural responses.
Categories of coping?
Adaptive Coping
- Problem-focused= Dealing with the stressor directly.
- Emotion-focused= Doing things to help change your feelings about the stressor without directly tackling the stressor.
Common coping responses in chronic illnesses?
1) Normalising
2) Denial
3) Avoidance
4) Resignation
5) Accommodation
