What do u mean by stress?
Stress is our response to events that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt our physical or psychological functioning.
List some negative stressors.
Death in the family, loss of a job, etc.
List some positive stressors.
Getting married, job promotion, etc.
Mention the characteristics of Stress.
- They are so intense that they produce a state of overload, i.e., we can no longer adapt to them.
- They evoke incompatible tendencies in us, such as tendencies to both approach and avoid an object/activity.
- Thye’re uncontrollable - i.e., beyond our limits of control.
Give the extension of GAS.
General Adaptation Syndrome.
Who proposed the GAS Model?
The GAS Model was proposed by Hans Selye in 1936 (British Journal Nature paper).
What are three stages of GAS Model?
- Alarm Stage
- Resistance Stage
- Exhaustion Stage
What is Cognitive Appraisal?
Cognitive Appraisal refers to the subjective or personal interpretation made by an individual to a situation or a stimuli in the environment that ultimately influences the extent to which the situation is percieved as stressful.
What are the two types of Cognitive Appraisal?
Primary and Secondary Appraisal
What is Primary Appraisal?
An assessment of how significant an event is for a person, analyzing whether an event is a threat or a opportunity.
What is Secondary Appraisal?
Considers one’s ability to cope or to take advantage of the situation.
