Stress Flashcards
A force applied to a material that tends to change that materials dimension
Stress
The stress that tends to pull something apart. It is the stress component perperndicular to a given surface to the fault palne, that results from forces applied perpendicular to the surface or from remote forces transmitted through the surrounding rock.
Tensional stress
The stress that squeezes something. It is the stress component perpendicular to a given surface, such as a fault plane, that results from forces applied perpendicular to the surface or from remote forces transmitted through the surrounding rock.
Compressional Stress
Stress vector acting across plane of zero shear stress
Principal stress
acts perpendicular to a reference surface
Normal Stress (σn)
Acts parallel to a reference surface
Shear Stress (τ)
Principal Normal Stress Components
(σ1> σ2> σ3)
The non-hydrostatic of stress, expressed as total stress with mean stress subtracted from the normal stress components.
Deviatoric Stress
