Principles and Concepts Flashcards
Continous, produces certain kinds of folds, ductile faults, cleavage and foliation
Ductile Deformation
Discontinuous, produces other kinds of folds, brittle folds, brittle faults and joints
Brittle Deformation
The closing and opening of an ocean basin
Wilson Cycle
states that small structures are key to mimic the style and orientations of larger structures of the same generation with a particular area
Pumpellys Rule
A rock mass in which original position is questionable with respect to the adjacent terrane or continent to which it is presently attached
Suspect terrane
Bears no resemblance to the mass to which it is attached and the source may be on the opposite side of a major ocean
Exotic Terrane
deals with the origin, kinematics, geometry of formation of structures
Structural Geology
Structures that occur as single features ( e.g a fault, or an isolated fault)
Non-penetrative structures
Structures that occur pervasively(e.g. cleavage, foliation and some folds)
Penetrative structures
