Stress Flashcards
Selye’s two forms of stress.
Good stress=
Bad stress=
Eustress. (Gets you to do stuff)
Distress. (Inability to cope)
Bad stress definition
Perceived demands greater than ability to cope.
Acute stress
Quick launch into fight or flight. The mobilisation of body’s resources.
Chronic stress
Long term stress.
Relationships, financial.
Prolonged release of hormones => wear and tear on mind & body
Arousal leads to: two nervous systems in ANS
Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
Sympathetic nervous system?
Gets you ready for action.
Provision of body resources to cope with sudden source or stress.
Fight or flight.
Parasympathetic nervous system?
Gets you back to normal. Does the opposite of sympathetic nervous system.
Anxiety is
A perceived threat, worrying over what COULD happen.
Fear is
an ACTUAL threat
Inverted U hypothesis
U curve graph
optimal performance thing. Too little emotional arousal = poor performance
Moderate emotional arousal = good performance
Extreme emotional arousal = poor performance
Arousal leads to GAS
general adaption syndrome
AKA
fight or flight.
Mainly part of the sympathetic nervous system.
3 phases of GAS:
(ARE)
Alarm
Reaction
Exhaustion
(A)larm phase
Heart starts pumpin, pupils dilate etc
Bronchi dilate, allow greater volume of air absorption
(R)esistance phase
Parasympathetic nervous system. Body tries to maintain peak performance, tries to keep body normal.
(E)haustion
Over a Variable period.
With no rest, everything continuing without respite, can result in death. Defence mechanism shuts down.
