• As pressure increases so does performance until overwhelmed
Components of Stress
• Stressor - event that creates demands
• Stress Response - persons reaction to the demands
o Influenced by how we judge the event and our capacity to react
The Stress Response
• Release of chemical messengers primarily adrenaline

- Nervous system and endocrine hormone system activated
- Blood redirected to brain and large muscles

- Increased alertness: improved vision and hearing
- Depression of immune system, digestion and similar restorative processes
Stress Response: Sympathetic Nervous System
• Two important systems are activated
o Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
• Extensive network of nerve fibers connection central nervous system to all other organs
o Endocrine System
• A network of glands throughout the body that release hormones
Type A Personality
- Competitive
- Unable to relax
- Easily Angered
- Very time conscious
- Interrupting
- Tightening of facial muscles
Type A – Consequences
• Greater risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks…. Not gender specific
