What are emotions?
Emotions are the link between mind and body
Emotions are usually classified into?
Emotions are usually classified as positive or negative depending on their psychological and physiological impact
Health + Longevity stats?
Health & Longevity (Danner, Snowdon & Friesen 2001)
• Study of 180 nun’s biographical graduation sketches for positive terms
• At 85, 90% of the most positive were still alive, as opposed to 34% of the least positive
• At 94, 54% of the most positive were alive as opposed to 11% of the least positive
Relationship stats?
(Keltner & Harker 2001)
• 141 senior-class photos from 1930 were studied for Duchene & non-Duhenne smiles
• 30 years later Duhenne smiles accurately predicted who was in a marriage, stayed married & experienced greater happiness
• Physical attractiveness was ruled out as an associated variable
Work Performance stats?
(Straw, Sutoon & Pelled 1994)
• 272 employees were measured on various assessments of emotion
• Employees with more positive emotions had better evaluations & higher pay
• They also choose higher goals, showed greater endurance & better performance evaluations
Emotional Intelligence (EI) stats
• Capability of individuals to:
– Recognise their own and other people’s emotions
– Understand and label different feelings accurately – Use emotional information to guide thinking and
behaviour
– Manage and adjust one’s behaviour accordingly
It’s about “reading” emotions whether yours or those of others and knowing what to do with that information

Key is Awareness: once you are aware you can change it
So, you need to have mechanisms to check in with yourself
