Q

what was the research (by Kiecolt-Glaser et al) into exam stress and NK cell activity?

A
measured the NK cell activity
recorded from blood samples
one month before (low stress)
during exams (high stress)
also completed questionnaire on experience of negative life events and social isolation

Findings
NK activity was significantly reduced in high stress samples
this means that exam stress reduced immune function making people more vulnerable to illness and infection

Q

research into general life stress and the common cold by Cohen et al

A

394 ppts completed q’s on number of stressful life events they’d experienced in the previous year. they also raged their degree of stress and level of negative emotions. then this gave them a stress index score.
they were then exposed to the common cold.

82% became affected. high stress index scores are closely related to ability to develop the cold.
so, life stress and negative emotions reduce the effectiveness of our immune system.

16
Q

What physical chafed are caused by the SAM pathway

A

pupils dilate

raised HR&BP

17
Q

what happens after the physical changes in the SAM pathway?

A

the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system activates, acting like a counter shock as the body cannot maintain the level of energy so returns the body back to its resting heart rate

18
Q

The HPA axis is chronic and stimulates what?

A

the piturity gland in the brain and causes the release of hormones, including ACTH

19
Q

The release of ACTH stimulates what and then releases which hormones? HPA

A

adrenal cortex

which releases corticosteroids-key one is cortisol

20
Q

HPA axis causes physiological effects on the body, some positive and negative, which are..

A

POSITIVE-constant supple of energy to the muscles through increased levels of glucose

NEGATIVE-suppression of the immune system to conserve energy-can pick up viruses

21
Q

illnesses linked with stress

A

common cold
flu
migraines

22
Q

define the immune system

A

a complex network of components that provide the body’s defence against PATHOGENS ie infections and bacteria

23
Q

Evaluate Kiecolt-Glaser (NK cells)

A

cannot generalise the results, very specific sample, medical students, other students may have different stress levels

reductionist-only measured NK which is a small part of a complex system

24
Q

Evaluate Cohen et al (common cold)

A

questionnaire-basic, lie, reduce validity

can’t establish cause and effect
