  1. pneumococcal polysaccharides capsule interferes with phagocyte recognition and engulfment
  2. pneumolysin (reuire autolysin) stimulate cytokines, disrupt the cilia of human respiratory endothelial cells and facilitate S. pneumonia to alveoli and spread beyond into the bloodstream. It suppresses host inflammatory and immune functions
  3. neuraminidase cleaves sialic acid that is present in host mucin (a type of glycoprotein)
