Strength Principles and Progressions Flashcards
What are the effects of injury on Skeletal Muscle?
Muscle Atrophy. Muscle Weakness. Immobilisation. Pain Effusion. Reduction in ranges of voluntary movements.
Define Strength?
The ability of a muscle to produce force.
Define Maximum Strength?
Force generated in a single maximal voluntary contraction.
Define Absolute Strength?
Force generated irrespective of body weight.
Define Relative Strength?
Force generated relative to bodyweight.
Define Elastic Strength?
Force generated at high velocity power.
Define Strength Endurance?
Force generated for sustained or repeated muscle action against a sub maximal resistance.
What is Tensile Strength?
The maximal amount of stress or force that a structure is able to withstand before tissue failure occurs.
What are the factors affecting muscle strength?
Muscle Size. Number and size of motor units. Type of Muscle contraction. Length of muscle. Angle of pull. Velocity of muscle action. Integrity of joint/muscle structure. Blood supply to the muscle.
What are the progressions in muscle strength?
Increasing the range through which the muscle works.
Increasing the resistance.
Lengthening the resistance arm.
Using concentric and eccentric exercises in succession.
Inserting a hold at various points range.
What are the 4 progressions in muscle work?
Static - Isometric.
Eccentric.
Concentric - Eccentric BW.
Concentric - Eccentric plus resistance.
What is the scale we use to measure muscle strength?
The Oxford Scale.
What are the precautions to resistance training?
Fatigue.
DOMS.
What are the Contra-Indications to resistance training?
Pain.
Inflammation.
