Muscle Work Flashcards
What does a muscle need in order for a contraction to take place?
Must be stimulated by a nerve impulse.
What is the all or none law?
A motor unit will contract maximally or not at all depending on whether the motor units threshold is stimulated.
Group muscle action is divided into which two areas?
Agonist.
Antagonist.
Define Agonists?
Muscle groups working together to produce a movement.
Define Antagonists?
Muscle groups acting on the opposite side of the joint.
Define an Isometric Contraction?
Increased tension at the muscle but with no change to the angle at the joint.
I.e Static Contraction.
Define an Isotonic Contraction?
Increased tension at the muscle causing it to shorten (concentric) or lengthen (eccentric) to overcome or control a resistance.
I.e Dynamic contraction.
Define an Isokinetic Contraction?
Contracting the muscle against a variable resistance at a constant speed.
