Progressions in Flexibility Flashcards
Define Flexibility?
The ability of joints to move through a full range of motion without restriction of the soft tissue structures.
What are the direct causes of poor flexibility?
Injury/Trauma/Pathology to the soft tissue. Immobilisation of sort tissue. Injury/Disease. Poor habitual posture. Reduced activity.
What are the indirect causes of poor flexibility?
Pain inhibition/fear avoidance.
Oedema/effusion/haemarthrosis.
Damage to joint surfaces/structures.
Muscle weakness/imbalance.
Define Stretching?
The ability to elongate or extend in length.
Define Creep?
Initial rapid increase in strain followed by a lower increase in strain at a constant stress overtime.
What is the Stress-Strain Curve?
The relationship between the stress and strain that a particular material displays.
What are the 2 types of Stretching?
Static.
Dynamic.
What is meant by Active Stretching?
Includes flexibility exercises performed by the patient without outside assistance.
What is meant by Passive Stretching?
Involves the use of equipment or another person.
What is meant by Dynamic ROM?
Muscle is taken through a full, slow and large ROM in a controlled manor.
What does PNF stand for?
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.
PNF Stretching is broken down into which 2 Areas?
Autogenic Inhibition.
Reciprocal Inhibition.
What are the Contra-Indications to Stretching?
Fractures when immobilisation necessary. Bony block that restricts motion. Acute inflammation within a joint. Extreme sharp pain with motion. Presence of hypermobility. Presence of instability of a joint. 0-48hrs of acute injury.
