Strength of Acids and Bases Flashcards
What do strong acids do
they completely(more then 99%) with water to produce hydronium ions
If the concentration of hydronium ions is high what does that mean for the pH
the pH is lower when there is a higher concentration of hydronium(high hydroniyum concentration = strong acid)(draw the diagram)
What are the major entities present in strong acids
oroducts, and water
What does a singe directional arrow represent?
strong acid or Strong base
what does the equilibrium arrow represent
weak acid or weak base
What do weak acids do
react incompletely with water(less then 50%) to produce relatively few hydronium ions
What does a relatively low concentration of hydronium ions indicate
pH is closer to 7
What are the major entities in weak acids
reactants, (includes water0
What do strong bases do
Dissociate completel in water to produce hydroxide ions
When there is a high concentration of hydroxide wat does that mean for pH
the pH is high whena solution has strong basic properties
What does a weak base do
reacts or disssociates partially with water t produce relatively few hydroxide ions
In a solution with strong basic properties how does the pH look like
the pH is higher(draw diagram)
What are the major entities in strong bases
products and water
How do you know what is a strong base
All ionice hydroxides of groups 1 and 2 (except beryllium) are strong bases, and all oxides of groups 1 and 2(except beryllium) are strong bases because they react with water to produce an ionic hydroxide.
What do weak bases do
react or dissociate partially with water to produce relatively low hydroxide ions
in a solution with weak basic properties how does the pH look like
pH is closer to 7(draw diagram)
what ar the major entities in a weak base
reactants and water
What are monoprotic acids
Monoprotic acids are acids that have only one acidic hydrogen atom in teir compound, and can only react once with water to produce hydroniums
What are polyprotic acids
Polyprotic acids are acids tha contain more then one acidic hydrogen atom and can react with water more then once to produce hydronium ions
what are the types of polyprotic acids
Diprotic acids- 2 hydrogen atoms that can react with water.
Tripotic acids-3 hydrogen atoms that can react with water
Note*
In general polyprotic acids are weak acids whos reaction with water decreaces with eachh step.
