Q

How was our Stratford fieldwork SMART?

A

Specific
- Clear and concise hypothesis: Regeneration has a positive impact on Stratford’s urban environment.

Measurable
- We could measure noise data using the ‘DecibelX’ app.
- We could take picture of the environment with our phones
- We could collect environmental data using the EQI survey

Attainable
- We visited three different sites in close proximity within Stratford, so we could feasibly collect data in one day.
(Carpenter’s Road Estate, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, East village) - all adjacent

Relevant
- Relevant to OCR B spec.

Time Based
- ^attainable.

Q

How was the geographical enquiry process appropriate to investigate our hypothesis?

A
  • Our aim was to see if regeneration has a positive impact on stratford’s environment. The actual investigation conducted was S.M.A.R.T which allowed for accurate and concise data to be collected.
  • We also used a mixture of quantitative and qualitative data methodologies to collect data: for example
    • Quantitative - noise, EQI - we presented these on mapped bar charts and radial graphs.
    • Qualitative - Taking photographs and annotating them.

^^Mixed methodologies allowed for a vast amount of representative data to be collect. Means accurate, reliable and authentic. Triangulation allowed us to eradicate the presence of anomalies.
^^ We calculated mean for each data category which also allowed us to get rid of anomalies.

Q

Examine the effectiveness of your data presentation techniques:

A

PHOTOS - printed and annoyed photos on A3 paper. This gave us powerful VISUAL data on the differences between each location allowing us to draw comparisons.

*East village - wide pavements which encourage sustainable and safe parking
*QEOP - abundance of greenery
* CRE - Graffiti

However - subjective, so not entirely reliable as its authenticity may have been tainted by the presence of bias.

NOISE DATA - We used the Decibel X I phone app. We walked to the data collection site that we obtain via random coordinate sampling. We calculated a mean for each located and plotted comparative bar charts - clear and visual differences.

Q

Explain how your fieldwork conclusions improved your understanding of a geographical question or issue.

A
  • Talk about our data
  • How we obtained it making it reliable etc
  • How we sampled it and drew the conclusions in the first place
  • And how this allowed us to understand the hypothesis
