Rio is a Coastal city located in the South East region of Brazil within the continent of South America.

- Brazil’s largest tourist destination with 2.8m annual visitors

Describe how migration has changed Rio:
- National
- International
National - In 1950s, rural to urban migration flow allowed for Rio’s development and industrialisation. Many ppl lived in favelas etc.
International - The city began when Portuguese settlers arrived in 1502 - leading to diversity within race currently (large ethnic mix)
Ways of life in Rio:
- Cultural
- Ethnic
- Cultural - Christ the Redeemer statue - religion etc, also favelas.
- Ethnic - Portuguese settlers link, and migration link.
Main contemporary issues faced in Rio: x2
Squatter settlements:
Favelas, 14m Cariocas live in wider Rio conurbation - link to crime, disease, health, education and poverty.
Traffic congestion:
4th worst traffic in any city in the world - contribution to EGHE - climate change etc
1 initiative to make Rio more sustainable:
Alemao favela cable car system
Successes:
- Environmentally sustainable bc it was powered by electricity and not GHG so doesn’t contribute to EHGE
- Socially sustainable as it allowed poorer slum dwellers to commute easily to work, hospitals + also economically sus.
Limitations:
- Closed down when funding was removed 2 weeks after 2016 FIFA World Cup
- So ppl had to use cars to get around^GHG emissions etc
