Strategies To Reduce Mass Movement Flashcards
Pinning
Drilling deep within the rocks and sticking long metal rods inside.
Stabilises the rock.
Netting
Metal Netting is fastened to rock/cliff faces.
Prevents loose blocks from falling below.
Use commonly above roads.
Gabions
Metal mesh boxes filled with rocks places in front of cliff faces.
Stabilises the rock and protects area below.
Drainage
Digging small trenches roadside and filling them w gravel.
Water is absorbed as gravel is highly permeable.
Prevents water from being clogged on slope causing landslide.
Grading
Gently cutting flat planes into rocks.
Steeper slopes are more unstable.
Grading removed the slope completely.
Afforestation
Planting vegetation binds soil, increases interception, evaporation with roots reducing the risk mass movements.
Less water in the soil reduces them chance is land slip.
Grouting
Injecting permeable rocks w cement to reduce permeability and stabilise slope.
Shotcrete
Loose rock surfaces can be sprayed w/ concrete.
Prevents loose rocks from falling/fracturing/collapsing from a cliff face.
Mapping Hazards
Detailed mapping of an area allows knowledges of which slope may need stabilising, or which may have previously collapsed.
