Atmospheric Transfers By Ocean Currents Flashcards
1
Q
Ocean currents driven by:
A
Prevailing winds.
Surplus heat energy in the tropics distributing to higher latitudes.
Warm currents transfer 20% of the energy compared to 80% transferred by winds.
2
Q
Source of warm ocean currents:
A
Equatorial zone.
Warm currents move N and S, returning as cold currents
.
3
Q
Great Ocean Conveyor Belt
How it works:
A
Warm water in the N.Atlantic heats surrounding air.
Loss of heat energy to air cools the water, making it denser.
Evaporation of water also increases salinity.
Water then sinks towards the equator and Antarctica.
Water then moves round to the Indian Ocean where it warms.
