Strange Things was launched at. pivotal point in the development of Netflix as a company.
Due to disappointing global gains, they wanted to expand in a way which secured success outside of a domestic audience. To do this, they must appeal to a wid range of demographics and people with differing cultural and beliefs and motivations. This is one of the reasons that the show utilises a range of codes and conventions from a variety of genres which are instantly recognisable to a broad group of people. This taps into pre-existing ‘fandom’ which Netflix can capitalise on.
