Magazine Conventions Flashcards
Composition and layout
The way in which elements are organised; how text, images and shapes are positioned. Central image usually in the middle third of the page for most eye catching feature. Most important text will be across the top/left/ centre - where eye is drawn to first .
Typography
The style and size of font uses indicates it’s relevance. Different font styles can evoke different meanings. No more than 3 styles will be used.
Modes of address and language
The way the magazine ‘talks’ to the audience will depend on the genre and target audience. Lexis usually straight forward so readers can quickly decide whether to buy the magazine.
Shot types and angles
The central/ primary image is usually a long or mid shot. The angle may depend on the subject and the message the magazine wants to communicate.
Strapline
Bands or lines that go at the top and: or the bottom of the page, usually filled with text.
Puff
A shape, usually contrasting colour, that attracts the readers eye.
Logo
Some magazines may also have a recognisable image. -appears on every issue.
Barcode
Placement of barcode used to purchase product
Price line
Placement of price
Masthead
Usually at the top of the cover/ placement for the magazine name. Instantly recognisable to the audience as a brand image.
Tagline
A catchy phrase that represents the brand
Slogan
A catchy phrase that represents the product and helps it stand out against rival products.
Date line
The line for the date of the magazine
Feature article
The main story, usually the int he largest font and possibly in a different colour to stand out.
Central image
The primary image of the cover, usually connected to the feature article and appeals to the audience .
