what are the three types of attachment

what was the aim of the strange situation
to see how infants aged 9-18 months behaved under conditions of mild stress and also novelty
what was the procedure of the strange situation
-it took place in a 9x9 square marked into 16 squares
-a controlled observation where the mother and child were observed in eight different scenarios
-set up in a lab with a two way mirror where ainsworth could make her observations
what happened when babies had a secure attachment
they were happy to explore and go bac to their caregiver (60-75%)
what happened when babies had insecure avoidant attachment
they explored freely but do not respond when the caregiver leaves (20-25%)
what happened when babies had insecure resistant attachment
they were clingy to the caregiver, huge separation distress but when reunited with the caregiver they resisted comfort (3%)
what was each attachment types reaction to the stranger
S- play with the stranger regardless of mothers presence, doesnt check for mothers presence
IA- shows fear of the stranger and avoids them whether the mother is there or not
IR- is indifferent to the stranger but when the mother leaves they ignore the stranger (fear)
what was each attachment types reaction to their mother leaving
S- intense reaction, clearly distressed
IA- becomes upset and distressed
IR- is not distressed and can seek comfort from the stranger
what is the reaction to the reunion with their mothers
S- happy in the first and second reunions and is quickly settled and resumes exploring
IA- wants comfort from the mother but may push away from her when approached, resists even if desired
IR- shows no interest in the mothers return
