they aimed to investigate the formation of early attachment, in particular the age at which they developed, their emotional intensity and to whom they were directed

60 babies (29f 31m) from glasgow, from working class families
how often were the babies studied
every month up until one year and then again at 18 months
what did they asses in the glasgow baby study
separation anxiety/ protest through the infant being left alone in the room, left in the pram outside shops, left in the cot at night etc. they also assessed stranger anxiety with the researcher starting home visits by approaching the infant to see if they were distressed
what were the findings of the glasgow babies study 25-32 weeks
between 25-32 weeks about 50% of babies showed separation anxiety usually towards the mother. attachment tended to be the caregiver who was most interactive and sensitive to the infants signals.
what were the findings of the glasgow babies study 40 weeks
at 40 weeks 80% had a specific attachment to the primary caregiver and 30% had multiple attachments

asocial, indiscriminate attachment, specific attachment, multiple attachments

-accept comfort from any adult
-recognise and prefer familiar adults
-smile more at familiar than unfamiliar adults
