एकस्मिन् वने एकः शशः अस्ति, एकः कूर्मः अपि अस्ति | एकस्मिन् दिने शशः कूर्मस्य अपहास्यं करोति | शशः वदति “ह ह ह! हे कूर्म! भवान् बहु मन्दं चलति | अहम् बहु शीघ्रं धावामि “ इति | कूर्मः वदति “अहं मन्दं चलामि, परन्तु अहं निरन्तरं चलामि” इति | तदा शशः वदति “अस्तु, एकां धावनस्पर्धां स्थापयाव | कः विजयं प्राप्नोति इति पाश्याव” इति | कूर्मः धावनस्पर्धार्थं अङ्गीकरोति | शशः वदति “एकं, द्वे, त्रीणि आरम्भः”!! द्वौ अपि धावतः | शशः शीघ्रं धावति, कूर्मः मन्दं चलति | शशः पश्यति, कूर्मः पृष्ठतः अस्ति इति | शशः चिन्तयति “कूर्मः बहु पृष्ठतः अस्ति | अहं किञ्चित् निद्रां करोमि” इति | शशः निद्रां करोति | कूर्मः निरन्तरं चलति | किञ्चित् कालानन्तरं शशः उत्तिष्ठति | शशः पश्यति यत् कूर्मः अंतिमस्थानस्य समीपे अस्ति | शशः शीघ्रं धावति | परन्तु कूर्मः प्रथमम् अन्तिमस्थानं प्राप्नोति | शशः वदति “हे कूर्म! कृपया क्षम्यताम्| अहम् अपहास्यं न करोमि” इति |
In a forest there lives a hare, also there lives a tortoise. One day the hare makes fun of the tortoise. The hare says “hahaha! Hey tortoise! You walk very slowly. I run so fast”. The tortoise says, “I walk slowly but I walk non-stop.” Then the hare says “okay, let’s keep a running race. Let’s see who wins.” The tortoise agrees for the race. The hare says “one, two, three start!!” The two of them start running. The hare runs fast, tortoise walks slowly. The hare sees that the tortoise is behind. The hare thinks “tortoise is very much behind. I will sleep for some time.” The hare sleeps. The tortoise walks without stopping. After some time, the hare wakes up. The hare sees that the tortoise is near the finishing point. The hare runs fast. But the tortoise first reaches the finishing point. The hare says “hey tortoise! Please forgive me. I will not make fun of you.”
