STORAGE Flashcards
Storage
keeping information in our memory & the retention of encoded material over time.
Sensory Memory
the immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system
Working Memory (short-term memory)
activated memory that holds a few items briefly, before the information is stored or forgotten.
Long-term Memory
the relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system. Includes knowledge, skills, and experiences
Hippocampus
Long-term processing site for explicit memories (knowing what, declarative)
Damage to left hippocampus: trouble remembering verbal information
Damage to right hippocampus: trouble recalling visual designs and locations
Cerebellum
plays role in processing implicit memories created through classical conditioning (know how, non-declarative)
Damage: people cannot develop certain conditioned reflexes
Long-term Potentiation
The more a memory is utilized, the more potential strength that neuron has (sleep can strengthen this)
