Encoding
Getting information into memory.
Automatic processing
Automatic and happens without our awareness (space, time, frequency).
Effortful processing
Requires extra encoding effort called elaboration to make the memory useful.
Rehearsal
(conscious repetition) is the conscious repetition of information, either to maintain it in consciousness or to encode it for storage
Semantic Encoding
encoding of meaning
including meaning of words
Acoustic Encoding
encoding of sound
especially sound of words
Visual Encoding
encoding of picture images
Rosy retrospection
Visual encoding - recalling the high points while forgetting the mundane (ex. DISNEY)
Peg-word system
Visual encoding - “one is a bun, two is a shoe, three is a tree, four is a door” –requires you to visualize a jingle.
Mnemonics
Visual encoding - memory aids, especially those techniques that use vivid imagery and organizational devices
Hierarchies
Visual encoding - few broad concepts divided and subdivided into narrower concepts.
