Stopping distance Flashcards
What is stopping distance?
Thinking distance + Braking distance
Give three things that can affect thinking distance?
Distractions
Alcohol
Tiredness
DAT!
Give three things that can affect braking distance
Icy roads
Worn tyres
Worn brakes
The greater the [blank] that the car was driving at the [blank] the braking distance distance
The greater the speed that the car was driving at the greater the stopping distance
Explain the dangers of large decelerations on cars
When a car is travelling at a high speed, a large braking force must be applied and so the car will decelerate rapidly.
This means that a large amount of kinetic energy is transferred to the brake’s thermal energy store which can cause the brakes to overheat and the driver to lose control of their vehicle
Thinking distance is proportional to what?
Velocity
Braking distance is proportional to what?
Velocity2
