Q

Explain why atmospheric pressure increases with height of a surface above ground level

A
  • Atmospheric pressure is created by the collisions of air particles with a given surface
  • As the height of the surface above ground level increases the number of air particles colliding with the surface decreases
  • This means that the force of weight exerted on the surface by the air particles decreases
  • This means that the atmospheric pressure decreases

Q

What is the pressure difference and when do you need it?

A

The atmospheric pressure- internal pressure (or whichever is greater take away the other one)

You use it when the two pressures are acting in opposite directions because you need to find the pressure difference to work out what the force acting on the object is and whether its from the outside or inside!
