Speed Flashcards
What is the equation for speed?
Speed = distance/time
What are the units for speed?
Meters per second (m/s)
What are the units for distance?
Meters (m)
What are the units for time?
Seconds (s)
What is the typical walking speed in the UK?
1.5 m/s
What is the typical running speed in the Uk?
3 m/s
What is the typical cycling speed in the UK?
6 m/s
What is the typical driving speed in the UK?
13 m/s
What is the typical speed for a fast train in the UK?
50 m/s
What is the typical speed for a cruising aeroplane in the UK?
250 m/s
What is the typical speed of sound?
330 m/s
What happens to the velocity of an object travelling at a constant speed in a circle?
When an object is moving at a constant speed in a circle then its velocity is constantly changing because the direction of the object’s motion is constantly changing
Define velocity?
The speed in a given direction that the object is moving
What is the equation for velocity?
Velocity= Distance/ Time
AND the DIRECTION the object is moving in (N,E,S,W)
What must you include in your answers about calculating velocity?
The DIRECTION that the object is moving
What are the units for velocity?
Meters per second (m/s)
Is speed is scalar or vector quantity and why?
Scalar
It has only magnitude (m/s) and not direction
Is velocity a scalar of vector quantity and why?
Vector quanitity
It has both magnitude (m/s) and direction
How do you calculate the total average speed for an entire journey?
Calculate the total distance (m) and the total time taken (s) and divide the distance by the time
What four things determine the speed that a person travels at?
- Age
- Fitness
- Type of terrain
- Distance travelled
Give three examples of objects that are travelling at a constant speed with a constantly changing direction
- A ball attatched to a string being swung in a horizontal direction at a constant speed
- A car driving around a roundabout at a constant speed
- The moon orbitting around the earth at a constant speed
