Stomach Disorders: Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and NSAID Ulcerations Flashcards

1
Q

What is Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome?

A
  • Tumors of the gastrin-secreting endocrine cells of the pancreas, or less frequently, the duodenal wall or abdominal lymph nodes, resulting in excessive acid production by the GI tract

Q

How do NSAIDs cause peptic ulcers?

A
  • The action of NSAIDs encourages mucosal permeability to increase drug absorption.
  • In so doing, it also inhibits mucus secretion central to the protection of the stomach lining
  • This increases the probability of stomach acids to penetrate the stomach epithelium
  • The longer NSAIDs are taken, the more of a compound effect takes place, eventually forming peptic ulcers
