Stomach Flashcards
What three areas is the stomach divided into?
The fundus
The body
The antrum
What do the fundus and body secrete acid from?
Parietal cells and pepsin precursor, pepsinogen, from peptic cells.
What does the astral region of the stomach produce?
Endocrine secretions which control gastric secretion itself as well as gastric motility. These are: Histamine, gastrin and somatostatin.
What layers of smooth muscle does the stomach have?
Circular and longitudinal layers as well as an oblique layer that allows distension of the stomach.
How is the lining of the stomach protected from acid?
Tight junctions between columnar epithelial cells prevents damage to underlying tissues from acid secretions.
Constitutive secretions of the alkaline mucus layer my mucous cells in the gastric mucosa provides a mechanical barrier to acid secretions and pathogens.
