What 3 things are associated with the GI tract?
The liver, the gall bladder and the pancreas.
What is the oral cavity responsible for?
Ingestion, fragmentation and initial digestion of food. Pathogen defences.
What are simple passages responsible for?
Transport of food or residues without significant alteration.
What is the digestive tract responsible for?
Digestion of food via enzymes and absorption of molecules produced.
What is the accessory secretory gland system responsible for?
Producing secretions which are transported to the digestive system via ducts.
What are the six types of epithelium layers found throughout the GI tract?
Simple squamous Stratified Simple cuboidal Stratified cuboidal Simple columnar Stratified columnar
What does simple tell you about the epithelial layer?
It has only 1 layer.
What doe stratified tell you about the epithelium layer?
That there’s >1 layer.
What does pseudo stratified tell you about the epithelium layer?
Its made of 1 layer that pretends to be 2.
What does squamous mean in terms of epithelial cells?
Flat cells.
What does columnar mean in terms of epithelial cells?
Column-like cells.
