A
- opening that diverts flow of urine or faeces in external bag
- Colostomy: operation where one end of the colon is diverted through a stoma
- Ileostomy: small intestine is diverted

Pharmaceutical needs
A
Avoid EC + MR preparation
Use: Soluble/uncoated tablets, liquid, capsules
More susceptible to GI side effects: NSAID, opioid, iron, magnesium + aluminium antacid
Electrolyte + water depletion:
- Digoxin: monitor + potassium sparing diuretic
- Diuretic: caution in ileostomy/urostomy + potassium sparing
- Potassium supplement: liquid formulation + split doses
- Laxative: Avoid ileostomy + Colostomy: bulk forming
