  • opening that diverts flow of urine or faeces in external bag
  • Colostomy: operation where one end of the colon is diverted through a stoma
  • Ileostomy: small intestine is diverted

Pharmaceutical needs

A

Avoid EC + MR preparation

Use: Soluble/uncoated tablets, liquid, capsules

More susceptible to GI side effects: NSAID, opioid, iron, magnesium + aluminium antacid

Electrolyte + water depletion:

  • Digoxin: monitor + potassium sparing diuretic
  • Diuretic: caution in ileostomy/urostomy + potassium sparing
  • Potassium supplement: liquid formulation + split doses
  • Laxative: Avoid ileostomy + Colostomy: bulk forming
