What were Stolypin’s aims for 1906-1911?
A
- Win over/ de-revolutionise the peasantry
- Suppress radicals
He did this through implementing policies concerning agricultural production, social discontent, political discontent

How was Stolypin successful in handling social discontent?
A
- Abolished redemption payments in 1907
- This received support from all levels and nobility saw it was necessary to win over the peasantry, and peasants had a burden lifted
- By far most popular policy
- Peasantry were given property rights (land ownership increased from 20% in 1905 to 50% in 1915), full civil equality, political representation in Duma (also helped fulfil aim of suppressing radicals)

- There was still discontent over most fertile land in the Black Earth Region was reserved for the nobility
- Counter judgement: concerns could be taken to the Duma, therefore less likely to join revolutionary action

- 3.5mil peasants moved to Siberia creating a new agricultural region - would boost investment into agricultural
- Grain production increased to 90mil tonnes by 1914 -fulfilled aim of higher crop yields to improve lives of peasantry

- Land in Siberia was difficult to farm - productivity was low
- Counter judgement: Only economically successful

A
- Harshly repressed revolutionary opposition: 60,000 political detainees executed, sentenced to penal servitude, or exiled
- Hundreds of radical newspapers shut down

- Repressing aggravated revolutionaries ultimately resulting in retaliation - Bogrov (an SR member) executed Stolypin in 18th September 1911
- This assassination would exacerbate the failures of his agricultural policies as his 20 year plan was cut short to 5
- Limited success - only eliminated short term threats
