Q

How did the Church prevent modernisation?

A
  • The Russian Orthodox Church was very conservative and deeply opposed to political change
  • The Church had become detached from the emerging urban population with one suburb in Moscow having only one priest for 40,00 people
  • Thus would exacerbate the opposition to liberalism and the church was determined to preserve Tsarism
  • Therefore Russia was unable to modernise as powerful institutions were not keeping up with changes in society

A
  • The peasantry made up 82% of the population
  • There was a diminutive commercial class of only 1.5%
  • It is the middle class that drives industrialisation as they have both the interest, skill and incentive. Without it Russia could not follow the western Industrial Revolution
  • This would prevent modernists there was no development that could help the struggling agricultural system or production of goods
