STM Flashcards
what is memory
process involved in retaining, retrieving and using information about stimuli, images, events, ideas, and skills after the original information is no longer present
what is sensory memory
brief stage of memory that holds info for seconds or fractions of a second. 1st stage of the modal model of memory
what is STM
a memory mechanism that can hold a limited amount of info for a brief period of time (30sec), unless there is rehearsal to maintain the info in STM
what is LTM
a memory mechanism that can hold large amount of info for long periods of time
what is the modal model of memory
memory as a mechanism that involves processing information through a series of stages, including STM and LTM
info form sensory memory–> STM
STM contains just the right amount of info that is actively processed (fragile and can be erased in -30 sec except repitition)
repitition leads to –> LTM
LTM has large information storage capacity
info in LTM is semantically encoded and relatively permanent
material stored in STM less than ____ is frequently forgotten
1min
to keep info in STM, you need to _____ it
repeat
how many digits can a person remember
5-9
what is chunking
combining small units into larger meaningful units
collection of elements strongly associated with one another but weakly associated with elements in other chunks
what is working memory
limited-capacity system for temporary storage and manipulation of information for complex tasks
comprehension, learning, reasoning
storage, process and manipulates information
Baddeley’s WM model
phonological loop: verbal and auditory information
- phonological store: limited qt of verbal and auditory info for secs
- articulatory rehearsal process: rehearsal process in WM that keeps items in phonological store (we translate everything into phonological form to rehearse)
- phonological similarity effect: acoustic confusion
central executive: coordinates both. determining role in overall functions or WM, diff to study
visuospatial pad: visual and spatial information (verbal info encoded as visual images)
- limited capacity, if too many items = no precise representation = cant be retrieved correctly
Revised WM model
central executive
Phonological loop
Episodic buffer: backup store taht communicates w/ LTM and WM
holds info longer and more info than PL and VSP
visuospatial sketch pad
