What is stigma?
Stigma is an attribute which discredits or disqualifies an individual from full social acceptance and marks them as being unacceptably different from ‘normal’ people with whom they interact

Prejudice
What is external stigma and what effects can it cause?
The experience of being treated differently to other people
It can cause avoidance, rejection, moral judgement, stigma by association, discrimination, abuse and victimisation
What is internal stigma and what effects can it cause?
The way in which a person feels about themselves
It can cause self exclusion from services and opportunities, low self esteem, social withdrawal, overcompensation and fear of exposure
