STI, HIV, and contrseption Flashcards
Maggie had sexual intercourse without using any form of contraception over the weekend and had to take the emergency contraceptive pill the next morning. She now realizes that she should take precautionary measures to ensure she does not fall pregnant or catch an STI.
a. Aside from the emergency contraceptive pill, identify a method of contraception and evaluate how it would best suit Maggie’s future sexual health needs. 2 marks
Students receive 1 mark for identifying a contraception method and 1 mark for evaluating how it suits Maggie’s needs.
Students can justify any contraception method (i.e. oral contraceptive pill, Implanon, vaginal ring, IUD) but the best to prevent pregnancy and STIs is a male or female condom.
A male or female condom (1 mark) would best suit Maggie’s sexual health needs as it offers her both pregnancy prevention and STI prevention as it stops the transfer of sexual fluids between sexual partners during intercourse (1 mark).
b. Identify and describe an STI, other than HIV, that Maggie might contract if she has frequent unprotected sex. 2 marks
Students receive 1 mark for identifying an STI and 1 mark for an appropriate description of said STI.
- Chlamydia (1 mark) – a bacterial infection spread through unprotected vaginal and anal sex. Symptoms of chlamydia often go unnoticed (1 mark).
- Gonorrhoea (1 mark) – a bacterial infection this is spread through unprotected vaginal, anal and oral sex. It can also infect the urethra, cervix, anus, throat, and eyes (1 mark).
- Syphilis (1 mark) – a bacterial disease that is transmitted though skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. If left untreated it can have serious health complications (1 mark).
- Herpes/genital herpes (1 mark) – two types of a virus that infect the mouth and genital area in the form of blisters and sores (1 mark).
-HPV, (1 mark) Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI).
-HIV/ AIDS (1 mark), Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks the body’s immune system.
-Public lice (1 mark) are spread through skin-to-skin contact and can cause small red areas or sores and itching.
-hepatitis A (1 mark) Most infections are from contaminated food or water but faecal-oral transmission can also occur during sex,
-hepatitis B (1 mark) sexually transmissible infection (STI) and blood-borne virus (BBV), which means it can be passed on through sexual contact or by blood to blood contact.
-hepatitis C (1 mark) Hepatitis A and C are not considered STIs however, they can be transmitted (passed on) during some types of sexual contact. Hepatitis C is a BBV (Blood-borne viruses).
