Steroids and Glucocorticoids Flashcards

Q

What is cortisol and how does it effect the body?

A

Cortisol is a steroid hormone released from adrenal glands. The hormone is released during periods of stress on the body which activates the sympathetic pathway. It increases your heart rate and blood pressure.
When released, insulin sensitivity is reduced, glucose uptake from tissue is reduced and glycogenesis is increased which all leads to hyperglycaemia.
