Pharmacokinetics Flashcards
What affects distribution of drugs?
Blood absorption
ease of penetration
retention of the drug within tissues
Things that stop penetration of drug?
Blood-brain barrier, blood retinal barrier and blood placental barrier
explain the 1st pass elimination
When administered orally, 1st pass elimination occurs as the drug is metabolised by the liver and gut which reduces the general dosage in the body.
sites of administration of drugs
Orally, IV, topically, Intramuscular, subcutaneous, rectally, vginally, inhalation, buccal, intranasal.
Describe elimination of drugs
Elimination of the drug can be done through multiple routes. Mainly the kidney then drug is passed through urine. Other routes include; breath, saliva, sweat, breast milk.
how are drugs distributed into the body and tissues?
Distribution refers to the drug being passed from bloodstream to surrounding tissues. depending on the solubility of a drug will depend on where it is distributed. A water soluble drug will distribute to other sites compared to a fat soluble drug.
Fat soluble drugs typically cross membranes quicker than water soluble.
Drugs penetrate different tissues at different speeds, depending on the drug’s ability to cross membranes.
