What are stereotypes?
A
The preconceived idea of what a specific group or individual should be. Generalisation of a group or individual.

What is prejudice?
A
Prejudice is an attitude - which means that cognition (schema) is combined with emotion - in this case, often liking or disliking the individual

A
Discrimination is a behaviour - based on stereotyping and prejudice

How are stereotypes formed?
A
- Illusory correlations - when we perceive a relationship between people and events, actions or behaviours, even when no such relationship exists
- Social Identity Theory - how social category salience can lead to the development of stereotypes of the “out-group.”

What are the possible effects of stereotypes?
A
- Stereotype threat - being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one’s group
- Schema - schema may play a role in how children understand and learn about gender roles
