Steps of mitosis Flashcards
List all the steps of mitosis in order
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens in interphase for mitosis?
-cells don’t divide
-all regular metabolic activities occurring
-chromosomes aren’t visible( they exist chromatin)
-chromosomes replication during S phase of interphase, results in sister chromatids attached at the centromere
What happens in Prophase for mitosis?
• chromosomes become visible because they shorten and thicken
• in animal cells, centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell and provide attachment for SPINDLE FIBRES
• nuclear membrane begins to disappear
What happens in Metaphase for mitosis?
•Spindle fibres are attached to centromeres
centromeres move sister chromatids to middle of cell
What happens in Anaphase for mitosis?
•Centromeres divide and the daughter chromosomes move to the opposite side of the cell
What happens in Telophase for mitosis?
•Chromosomes lengthen, spindle fibres dissolve and nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatin
•followed by cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm)
What is the process called after mitosis occurs and explain the processes?
-CYTOKINESIS
•in animal cells cleavage furrow devolops pinching cell into two
•in plant cells, cell plate forms into a new cell wall
