Steps of Meiosis 1 Flashcards
List the stages of meiosis 1 in order
interphase, prophase1, metaphase1, anaphase1,telophase1, cytokinesis
Explain interphase in meiosis 1
During interphase, DNA is replicated to produce a tetrad (homologous chromosome that has 2 sister chromatids)
what happens in prophase 1 during meiosis?
-chromosomes shorten and thicken
-crossing over , mixes genetic material
-Each sister chromatid intertwines with a sister chromatid from matching homologous chromosomes in a process called synapsis
-Nuclear membrane disappears
-Spindle fibres form
-centrioles move to end of cell
what happens in metaphase 1 in meiosis?
-spindle fibres attach to centromeres on chromosomes
-homologous chromosomes (tetrads) lineup in the middle of cell
What happens in anaphase one in meiosis?
spinal fibres pull tetrad apart
Homologous pairs separate and move to opposite sides in cell
what happens in Telophase one during meiosis?
homologous pairs are at opposite sides
-Cell divides into two
-Spinal fibres disappear
-Nuclear membrane forms around sister chromatids
-Each daughter nucleus receives 1 member of the original chromosome pair
what is synapsis
process where sister chromatid intertwines with a sister chromatid
Is the DNA duplication between meiosis one and two?
NO
what is a tetrad
A pair of homologous chromosomes
